Iowa backup QB Carson May enters transfer portal
Iowa backup quarterback Carson May has entered the transfer portal according to Matt Zenitz of On3.com.
A 6-foot-4, 221-pound Oklahoma native, May was a true freshman at Iowa this past season. He started the year No. 4 on the depth chart for the Hawkeyes, but moved up to No. 2 behind Joe Labas for the Music City Bowl after a season ending injury to Spencer Petras and Alex Padilla announcing that he plans to transfer.
After redshirting at Iowa in 2022, May will have four years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.
Carson May Background
An On3 consensus three-star prospect coming out of Jones High School in the Class of 2022, May chose Iowa over scholarship offers from Western Michigan and Old Dominion.

As a senior, he finished the season 198/308 passing (64.3%) for 3,082 yards with 37 touchdowns and four interceptions and added 466 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns on the ground for Jones in 2021.
Iowa Impact
May’s departure leaves Iowa with only two quarterbacks on the roster for spring practice right now with Labas returning and transfer Cade McNamara coming in. McNamara, who is expected to start in 2023, is coming off knee surgery and will likely be limited until about mid-spring. Then, looking ahead to next season, true freshman Marco Lainez will arrive in June. May’s departure does open the door to the possibility of finding another transfer or recruit at the position if the Hawkeyes can find the right fit.
