Iowa Soccer falls in PK's to Washington at the Big Ten Tournament

The Big Ten Tournament has been a place where Dave Dilanni and Iowa Soccer team has flourished over the past few years. The Hawkeyes had won it twice in the last four seasons, and entered play on Saturday night looking to keep the NCAAT national seed hopes alive. They came up just short.

Following 110 minutes without a goal, Iowa and Washington went on to a penalty shootout. Both goalkeepers made big saves, but GK Mia Hamant turned away Miah Schueller in the seventh round of penalties to give the Huskies the upset win.

Although Washington recorded 19 shots in the match, Macy Enneking was only forced to make six saves. She was tested in the 3rd minute on a header by Ioanna Papatheodorou, but made a diving save to keep the Huskies off the board. Late in the opening half, in the 37th minute, Iowa came up with a dangerous chance of their own. Sofia Bush put a header on goal, but GK Mia Hamant, like Enneking, was up for the challenge, making a diving save.

In the second 45, both sides registered a near scoring chance. In the 52nd minute, on a corner kick. Washington’s Kolo Suliafu put a header on net, but defender Millie Greer was there to clear the ball off the line. In a moment where she had to be perfect with her clearance, Greer did the job.

The Hawkeyes best chance of the second half came in the 62nd minute. Opting to the play a short corner kick, Lauren Geczik got into the box and sent a shot on goal. It took a redirect off of a Washington defender and nearly beat GK Mia Hamant at the near post, but she was able to cover it.

Neither ten-minute extra time period yielded much action, which sent the game to a penalty shootout.

For the game, Washington outshot Iowa 19-17, but the Hawkeyes had a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 8-6 in favor of Iowa. Meike Ingles and Sofia Bush each recorded four shots.

Up Next: The Hawkeyes will await their NCAA Tournament assignment, which will very likely include a first-round match at the UI Soccer Complex. The Selection Show is set for 3:00pm CT on November 11th.
