Former Syracuse defender Iba Oching announced her transfer commitment to Iowa Soccer on Tuesday evening. She has three years of eligibility remaining, after spending her freshman season with the Orange.

“What really stood out about the Iowa Soccer program was the incredible support from the coaching staff and the positive environment created by the team,” Oching told HawkeyeReport. “On my visit, I loved how welcoming everyone was, which made me feel like it was the right fit for me.”

“I’m excited to join the team and look forward to contributing to the team’s success!”

“I spoke to different programs (in the portal) before narrowing my list down to three. Ultimately, Iowa stood out to me academically and athletically, especially with the recent success the program has had these past couple of seasons.”

As a freshman this past season at Syracuse, Oching appeared in 17 matches with 16 starts. She totaled 1,460 minutes on the back line for the Orange, including playing all 90 minutes in 15 matches. Oching recorded her first career goal against Maine on August 18th.

“I learned a lot about myself as a player, especially in adapting to the competitive nature of the ACC. It really challenged me to elevate my game and focus on the details,” said Oching. “I would describe myself as a hardworking and versatile defender who thrives in competitive environments. I always strive to give my best on the field and support my teammates.”

A native of Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, Oching played for the Canada U17 National Team, competing at the 2022 U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup in India. She also competed with the Vancouver Whitecaps Girls Elite Academy, winning a pair of League 1 British Columbia Championships (’22 and ’23).
