Four-star ’25 Iowa WBB guard signee Addie Deal (Santa Ana, IA) was in Iowa City for the weekend to see the Hawkeyes upset win over fourth-ranked USC and Caitlin Clark’s jersey retirement ceremony. Rated as the #15 player in the country per the On3 Industry Rankings, Deal got another chance to see a crowd of 15,000 inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. A capacity crowd that she will be playing in front of as a true freshman next season.
“That thought alone brings the biggest smile to my face,” Deal told HawkeyeReport. “I’ve never played in front of so many people but just watching Iowa women’s basketball live, the crowd makes a huge difference and really brings the energy.”
“The fan support of Iowa had a major impact on my recruiting process. I think it’s so amazing that I get the chance to play the game I love with so many people supporting me. Iowa and Iowa City really values and shows their love for women’s basketball – you don’t see that everywhere.”
It’s been nearly a year since Addie committed to the Hawkeyes over offers from other top schools like, LSU, USC, UCLA, Stanford, Iowa State, Indiana, Arizona and Oregon. At the time of her commitment, Lisa Bluder was still head coach of the program. Just 62 days later, Bluder retired and longtime assistant coach Jan Jensen took over. Deal opted to stick with her commitment.
“The amazing thing is that she hasn’t changed,” said Deal of her soon to be head coach. “She is so dedicated to Iowa and Iowa basketball. It’s infectious. Coach Jan is amazing with the X’s and O’s and incredible at assessing talent. Obviously as the head coach, she is being interviewed, and press conferenced more, and I think she’s done an amazing job.”
This past weekend, Deal, along with her future teammate Journey Houston visited campus with several highly touted uncommitted recruits. The headliner, ’26 five-star guard Kate Harpring is someone that Addie has known for some time through connections with trainer Brandon Clay.

“Kate’s an amazing player and I would love for us to be on the court together,” Addie said. “Everyone’s recruiting journey is different. I’ll let Kate’s journey be hers, but I think we would play very well together.”
“Coach Jan and the Iowa staff have done a phenomenal job bringing in excellent recruits that fit the culture…I was also able to connect with some other amazing recruits this past weekend, like Finley Chastain, Addison Bjorn, Jenica Lewis, and Jhaliana Guy.”
Last season, as a junior at Mater Dei High School, Addie missed the majority of her season with an ankle injury, but returned to full health and had an impressive summer with her Cal Stars EYBL team. As for Mater Dei this season, the Monarchs are 26-2 overall, and ranked third in the country by ESPN. Deal is averaging 19.3 points (539 pts), 6.9 rebounds (193 reb), 5.8 assists (162 ast) and 3.6 steals (101 stl) per game, which leads the team in all four categories. She’s shooting 50.0% from the floor, 38.0% from three-point range and 78.0% from the free throw line.
“It’s been so nice to really be focused on high school basketball and know I have my Iowa people supporting me throughout it,” said Deal. “From the time since my injury I feel like I’ve improved most in my physicality, grit, and continuing to elevate players around me.”
