Iowa WBB has added Georgia Tech assistant LaSondra Barrett to the coaching staff.

On Friday, the Iowa Women’s Basketball team announced that Georgia Tech assistant coach LaSondra Barrett will join the coaching staff. She fills the opening that was left when Raina Harmon took the head coaching job at Florida Gulf Coast.

Barrett played her collegiate basketball at LSU from 2008-12 and most recently was on staff at Georgia Tech, serving as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for the last three seasons.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to join the Iowa Women’s Basketball staff”, Barrett said in a press release from the school. “This program has a storied tradition of excellence, built on a foundation of hard work, integrity, and a true passion for the game. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a culture that not only produces success on the court but also empowers young women to grow as leaders and individuals. I look forward to working alongside Coach Jensen and her outstanding staff, and I’m eager to get to work in support of this incredible team and the Hawkeye community.”

Originally from Flowood, Mississippi, LaSondra Barrett was a McDonald’s All-American recruit out of Murrah High School in Jackson, MS. She played her collegiate basketball at LSU from 2008-12, winning SEC Freshman of the Year and earning First Team All-SEC honors, both as a junior and a senior. Barrett was drafted by the Washington Mystics in 2012 WNBA Draft and spent three seasons playing professional basketball, including time in Israel and Australia.

Barrett joined the Georgia Tech coaching staff as an assistant coach in April 2022 and added recruiting coordinator to her title prior to the 2024-25 season. In her three seasons on the Yellow Jackets staff, they went 52-44, including WNIT appearance in ’24 and an NCAA Tournament appearance this past season. At the conclusion of the season, sixth-year head coach Nell Fortner announcer her retirement and Barrett was named interim head coach until Maryland assistant Karen Blair was announced as the new head coach.

Prior to joining the staff at Georgia Tech, Barrett spent two seasons at Houston, one as director of recruiting operations and one as an assistant coach working primarily with post players. During her time with the Cougars, they made a pair of appearances in the WNIT, including a Super 16 trip in 2021.

LaSondra began her career in coaching after retiring from professional basketball, spending two seasons as the director of player personnel at LSU (2014-16). She also spent time on staff as an assistant coach at Florida International (2016-17) and Louisiana Tech (2018-19).
