Iowa Women's Basketball hires Randi Henderson to the coaching staff

On Wednesday, the Iowa Women’s Basketball team announced that Washington University in St Louis head coach Randi Henderson will join the coaching staff as an assistant coach. Henderson has racked up 21 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, including 17 years as head coach and two years as a DI assistant coach. She played her collegiate basketball at Iowa from 1997-2001.

Randi Henderson is a native of Cedar Falls and was named Miss Iowa Basketball in 1997. For the Hawkeyes, Randi was a three-year starter, a team captain and a First Team All-Big Ten selection in 2001. Henderson helped Iowa advance to a pair of NCAA Tournaments, including in 2001 in the first year under Lisa Bluder. She finished her career with 936 points and 745 rebounds, which ranks 11th on the program’s all-time list.

Henderson has spent the last seven seasons as the head coach at Washington University in St Louis. She racked up a 103-54 (.656) overall record, including four NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bears made the NCAA Tournament in her first two years, including a run to the sectional finals during the 2018-19 season. They also made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of her last two seasons.

Prior to her arrival at WashU, Henderson spent two years at Charlotte as an assistant coach under former Hawkeye Cara Consuegra. Over two seasons, the 49ers posted a 41-21 overall record, including a WNIT appearance during the 2015-16 season and a 21-10 record during the 2016-17 season.

Prior to heading to Charlotte, Henderson spent nine seasons as head coach at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She led the Kohawks to three 20-plus win seasons, including a school-record 26 wins in 2010-11 en route to the NCAA Sectional Semifinals. Henderson won the IlAC Coach of the Year award in 2010 and 2011, while she accumulated a 155-91 (.630) overall record as head coach of the Kohawks.

Henderson began her coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at Athens High School in Ohio, before heading to the University of Minnesota-Morris. She spent three years on staff with the Cougars, including two years as an assistant coach and one year as a head coach. During the 2005-06 season, Minnesota-Morris finished with a 16-10 record, including a 10-4 mark in conference play. Henderson was named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
