Iowa Women's Basketball sells out Carver for the 2023-24 season
A sold out Carver-Hawkeye Arena currently means a crowd of 15,056. In it’s entire history, the building has been fully sold out for just three women’s basketball games. 1988 against Ohio State, 2022 against Michigan and 2023 against Indiana are the three occasions. The UI Athletics Department announced that every single one of the Hawkeyes home games for the 2023-24 season have been sold out. On by the way, the season opener against Fairleigh Dickinson is still 84 days away.
The Hawkeyes set a Big Ten record last season for highest average attendance for conference games, with over 11,100 fans attending their nine home contests. After Iowa made a a run to their first Final Four since 1994 and made their first ever national title game, season tickets were in such high demand that the athletic department was forced to put a pause on sales.
Iowa ranked second in the country last year behind South Carolina, averaging 11,143 fans per game, with the season total surpassing 200,500. The Gamecocks led the country averaging 12,942 last season. A number the Hawkeyes are set to shatter this coming season. Tennessee is the only team in NCAA women’s basketball history to ever average more than 15,000 fans in a season and they accomplished the feat five times, all under legendary coach Pat Summit. The Hawkeyes will have the highest average attendance since Tennessee averaged 15,796 fans back in 2008. As for Iowa women’s basketball attendance at Carver, the fanbase is consistently ranked in the top 10 for attendance and has ranked in the top 25 in each of the past ten seasons.
Last season, the Hawkeyes finished with a 31-7 record and finished second in the Big Ten regular season standings. They went on to win the Big Ten Tournament in Minneapolis, then defeated Southeastern Louisiana, Georgia, Colorado and Louisville en route to the Final Four in Dallas. Their biggest win came in the national semifinal, when they ended South Carolina’s 42-game winning streak and their unbeaten season.

The Iowa women’s team returns three starters, including National Player of the Year Caitlin Clark, who averaged 27.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 8.6 assists for a Hawkeye squad that advanced to the National Championship game. They also return starting guards Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall, as well as Big Ten Sixth Player of they Year Hannah Stuelke.
The Hawkeyes will open the season with the “Crossover at Kinnick” exhibition on October 15th against the DePaul Blue Demons inside Kinnick Stadium. Iowa fans will be attempting to break the NCAA record (29,619) for largest single game attendance.
