The Hawkeyes will face the Hokies in Charlotte next season.

Ever since Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes advanced to the Final Four, the fanbase has been clamoring for a high-profile non-conference game to kick off the 2023-24 season. They get their wish, as it was announced this morning that Iowa face off against Virginia Tech in the Ally Tipoff on November 9th at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is a matchup of two programs that advanced to last year’s Final Four in Dallas.

“We are excited to take our team to Charlotte this November and play a quality team such as Virginia Tech, who joined us in the Final Four last season,” said head coach Lisa Bluder in a press release from the school.  “This will be another great opportunity to showcase our sport on the national stage and create exposure for our university.”

Last season, head coach Kenny Brooks led his Hokies team to a 31-5 record, including an ACC Tournament Championship over Louisville. They defeated Chattanooga, South Dakota State, Tennessee and Ohio State en route to the Final Four, where they fell to eventual champion LSU.

The backcourt matchup will be one of the most intriguing ones to start the season as it will pit the National Player of the Year Caitlin Clark up against All-American point guard Georgia Amoore. Clark averaged 27.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 8.6 assists, while scoring 1055 points on the year. Amoore averaged 16.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists, while finishing second in the country in made three-pointers with 118.

The Hawkeyes return three starters, including Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin, while they also return Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year Hannah Stuelke. Presumed center starter Addison O’Grady will have a tough matchup in the post against Second Team All-American Elizabeth Kitley, who averaged 18.2 points and 10.7 rebounds a year ago.

The matchup will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs, with the Hawkeyes leading the series 2-1. The last matchup came in 2011 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena with Iowa winning by a final score of 58-47. Under Lisa Bluder, the Hawkeyes are 12-9 against ranked teams over the last three seasons.

The game will air on ESPN platforms, with specific details the game, such as, tip time and TV channel will be announced at a later date. Tickets will go on slate later in the summer, but fans can sign up for more information on presalte opportunities at AllyTipoff.com.
