Noah Shannon out of Big Ten Media Days due to "gambling involvement", Jay Higgins to replace him
Big Ten Media Days is set to kick off at Lucas Oil Stadium in seven days, but the Hawkeyes released some news about a reshuffle in who will be attending the event in Indianapolis. Initially, it was announced that Head Coach Kirk Ferentz would take CB Cooper DeJean, TE Luke Lachey and DT Noah Shannon. Due to Shannon’s involvement in the NCAA investigation into sports gambling, linebacker Jay Higgins will take his place. A statement from Noah was included in a press release by the school.
“Being selected to represent the Iowa Hawkeye football team at Big Ten Media Day is a tremendous honor and privilege. I am grateful for the opportunity. However, given the circumstances I told Coach Ferentz it would best for him to select another player. Since the NCAA review is not yet complete, I don’t feel it is right for me to represent the team.”
“Noah’s decision to share this information and suggest that another player take his place is reflective of his character,” said Coach Ferentz. “Noah is a committed and dedicated teammate, and this is a fine example of him always wanting to put the team first.”
Shannon started 13 games last season on the defensive line, racking up 44 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss. His best game came against Nebraska, as he finished with six total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss. He was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the coaches and the media.

In his place, Indianapolis native Jay Higgins will attend media days as the third Hawkeye. He is entering his fourth year with the program and is projected to be the starting middle linebacker after Jack Campbell moved on to the NFL. Higgins appeared in 12 games last season with two starts, finishing with 39 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. His best game came against Northwestern, where he racked up a career-high 11 tackles in the 33-13 win.
Big Ten Media Days begin on Wednesday, July 26th at 10:30am on the Big Ten Network. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz’ press conference is scheduled for 12:15-12:30pm CT.
