For the last 20 years, the Perfect Game Baseball organization has hosted the PG All-American Classic at MLB stadiums around the country to showcase the top high school baseball players in the country. Guys like Andrew McCutchen (2004), Buster Posey (2004), Freddie Freeman (2006), Bryce Harper (2009), Francisco Lindor (2010), Lucas Giolito (2011) and many more have participated in the game throughout the years. For the first time in the history of the game, the Iowa Hawkeyes will have a commit competing in the event. Class of 2024 commits P Joey Oakie (East Team) and INF Myles Davis (West Team) were selected for the event set to take place on August 20th at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

“I grew up watching the PG AA game, dreaming of playing on that field with that talent level,” said Oakie. “As a young kid, I didn’t really think I’d ever have the opportunity to play in that game and now that I have the opportunity, it’s an amazing feeling to look back and see how much I’ve grown.”

Out of Ankeny Centennial High School, Joey Oakie is rated as the #1 overall prospect in the state of Iowa and the #35 prospect in the country by Perfect Game. Oakie is the fourth highest rated pitcher to come out of Iowa over the last ten years, behind Carter Baumler (2020, #29), Brody Brecht (2021, #30) and Mitch Keller (2014, #31).

This past season as a junior for the Jaguars, Oakie started ten games and finished with a 1.13 ERA over 49.2 innings pitched. He struck out 91 batters and had an impressive 16.5 SO/9. Opponents batted just .110 against him and averaged 0.36 hits per inning. One of his best performances of the season came against Dowling Catholic, when he struck out 14 batters and allowed just one hit over 6.0 innings in a 6-1 victory.

“I grew up a Hawkeye fan. We had season tickets to football most of my life,” said Oakie. “I really got along well with the coaches and they saw me as more than just a baseball player and it felt like home.”
