Joey VanWetzinga enters transfer portal

Timing can sometimes be everything for for Joey VanWetzinga it certainly played a role in his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday afternoon. After enrolling early at the University of Iowa, primarily because his older brother Rusty, was on the Iowa football team as a walk-on, he decided that after a few months in Iowa City he was ready to move on.
To rewind the clock a bit, in December, Joey VanWetzinga signed his letter of intent to be a Hawkeye. He was an early verbal pledge to the Hawkeyes and the 6-foot-2 and 260 pound offensive lineman appeared to be a perfect fit. Plus his brother was a fullback on the roster, so they could potentially play together.

However, between the time of the commitment and signing day, a lot changed. Iowa’s new offense under coordinator Tim Lester was different and did not include a fullback very often. Then there was also the roster limitations that were coming due to the NCAA settlement in the House case. That meant the football roster was going to be trimmed to just 105 players, so 20 spots would be gone. Iowa made the difficult decision to cut their fullbacks loose.
That meant that Rusty VanWetzinga headed to the portal literally the day after his brother signed with the Hawkeyes. He has landed at Central Michigan and now the question is will his brother be joining him?
