In-state offensive lineman Mason Knipp has made his college decision. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound senior from Columbus Catholic High School in Waterloo announced today that he has accepted a preferred walk-on opportunity with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

For Knipp, who had a scholarship offer from UNI, the chance to play in the Big Ten for the team that he grew up rooting for was too good to pass up.

“I really enjoyed my visits there more than any other place,” Knipp told HawkeyeReport.com. “The entire staff there were always great and I really like the coaches there.”

“On top of all that, it’s always been a dream to play at Iowa,” said Knipp. “I am really appreciative of this opportunity and plan to make the most of it.”

Knipp, who was dominant on both sides of the ball for Columbus, finished his senior season with 78 tackles, 36.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks last fall, but projects more at interior offensive line in college. Also an outstanding wrestler, he won a state title in Class 1A at 220 pounds last year as a junior and heads into the postseason ranked No. 1 at 285 pounds this season.
