Patrick McCaffery in portal, exploring options
On Tuesday it was senior Tony Perkins entering the transfer portal while also exploring professional opportunities. Today it was Patrick McCaffery doing the same. The news that McCaffery would not return to Iowa for a sixth year was not a surprise. He had said as much in a press conference prior to his final regular season home game and then after the loss to Utah he did the same in an Instagram post.
For his career, the 6-foot-9 forward and son of head coach Fran McCaffery, averaged 8.4 points per game. This past season, he averaged 8.9 points per game while starting the first 15 games of the season and then coming off the bench for the final 16 that he played. His best game this past season was 22 points against Alabama State. For his career, McCaffery’s top scoring game was 24 points against Wisconsin in December of 2022. In the final game of the season against Utah, McCaffery led Iowa with 19 points.
McCaffery battled childhood cancer as a teenager and during his college career he has been very open and forthcoming about his battle with anxiety, which has caused him to miss playing time, particularly in his junior year.
