The #1 Iowa Field Hockey team was back in action at Grant Field in Iowa City on Friday afternoon to take on the 11th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The game was all that you would expect from a matchup between two of the best teams in the Big Ten, but it was OSU that came away with the 2-1 upset victory. The Buckeyes have won back-to-back games against the Hawkeyes for the first time since 2009 and 2010.
Ohio State got the scoring underway in the 30th minute, with a goal from Makenna Webster on a penalty corner as time expired in the first half. That put the Hawkeyes behind for the first time since their season opening weekend Sunday game against North Carolina. Iowa tied things up in the 38th minute off a goal from Dionne van Aalsum. She was assisted by Lieve Schalk, who did a great job of creating the scoring opportunity. In the 41st minute, it was Ohio State that got the game deciding goal on a penalty corner. The intial shot from Claudia Thomas was saved, but an unlucky bounce on a clearout attempt from Lieve Schalk led to a Buckeyes goal from Brenna Bough. The Hawkeyes came within inches from tying the game in the 59th minute, but came up empty. The 2-1 loss ended their undefeated run at nine games.
