Play-by-play recap: Iowa 12 Northwestern 1 (F/7)
Wash, rinse, repeat. Another Big Ten win for the Iowa Baseball team and it comes in dominating fashion, with the Hawkeyes defeating Northwestern 12-1 in 7 innings to start the series in Evanston. With the win, Iowa moves to 19-9 overall and 11-2 in Big Ten play, taking sole possession of first place in the standings with UCLA on their bye week.
At the plate, the Hawkeye bats took advantage of 11 free bases given by the Wildcats pitching staff. They followed four consecutive walks with four consecutive hits to put up five runs in the second inning. They added on with two runs in the sixth and five runs in the seventh to reach run-rule territory. Gable Mitchell and Miles Risley each had two hits, while five different Hawkeye hitters tallied two RBI’s.
Cade Obermueller was nearly perfect on the mound, allowing one run on one hit over 7.0 innings, striking out a career-high 12 hitters. That surpassed his previous career-high (11) set last week against Minnesota. He threw 66 of his 97 (68.0%) pitches for strikes.
