Williamsburg native Rayce Heitman has made his college decision. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound defensive back/wide receiver announced today that he has accepted a preferred walk-on opportunity from the Iowa Hawkeyes following his latest visit to campus on Saturday.

Heitman, who is coming in as a defensive back, had scholarship offers at the FCS level, but said the opportunity to stay close to home and play for the Hawkeyes was too good to pass up.

“South Dakota and South Dakota State were on my mind, but Iowa is one you can’t miss,” Heitman told HawkeyeReport.com. “The fact I always grew up an Iowa fan and loved watching the Hawks when I was a little kid and with an opportunity like this being so close to home, you can’t miss it.”

It also helps that Iowa currently has a walk-on from Williamsburg making big plays for them in Kaden Wetjen, who had an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown on Saturday.

“It definitely helped seeing him succeed and just talking with him,” said Heitman. “I know it’s a place where I can see myself in the future.”

As a senior this season, Heitman has put up big numbers for Williamsburg with 58 catches for 1,015 yards and 20 touchdowns on offense and 69 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and one interception on defense. As the Raiders get ready to start the Class 3A state playoffs, the Class of 2025 prospect is glad to have the weight of his college decision off his shoulders.

“It’s a great feeling knowing I have a place to call home in the future and where I have support from family and friends,” Heitman said.
