Rick Heller talks Hawkeyes win over Indian Hills
Outside of a few moments here and there, the Iowa Baseball team put together a complete performance, both at the plate and on the mound, in their 18-2 win in 14 innings over Indian Hills Community College. Listen to head coach Rick Heller discuss several parts of their win over the Warriors.
Game Summary
Offensively for the Hawkeyes, 12 players registered a hit and they scored in five of the first six innings to build a 16-1 lead. The bats got on the board with a five spot in the first inning. The first three batters reached base with hits, including a two-run double from Utah transfer Davis Cop. After a Ben Wilmes sacrifice fly, College of San Mateo transfer Connor Hennings delivered a two-run home run (104 mph exit velo) to left center to make it 5-0 Iowa.
In the bottom of the second inning, Davis Cop added a run with his second run scoring double of the game. Already up a touchdown (7-0) in the fourth inning, Sam Petersen added on with an RBI single, while Ben Wilmes poured on two more runs with a double into the left centerfield gap. Andy Nelson made the most of his first at-bat off the bench with a two-run double to extend the lead to 16-1 in the sixth inning. Kyle Huckstorf and freshman catcher Max Burt each had solo home runs.
Michael Seegers and Davis Cop each had three hits on the day, while Cop had three doubles with over 100 mph exit velocities. Kyle Huckstorf, Sam Petersen, Ben Wilmes, Connor Hennings, Cade Moss and Kellen Strohmeyer all finished with two hits apiece.
On the mound, the pitching staff allowed just two runs on six hits, while they racked up 24 strikeouts to just five walks. Marcus Morgan started the game and retired six of the seven batters he faced over two innings, including a strikeout. He finished his outing with a seven pitch second inning. Creighton transfer Anthony Watts struck out a pair of batters in the third inning after allowing the first two batters to reach base. Cade Obermueller struck out two in a quick 1-2-3 fourth inning.

Jack Whitlock worked around a hit in the sixth for a scoreless inning, while Zach Voelker continued to pitch lights out this fall. He struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning. Ben DeTaeye allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth inning, but struck out three batters.
Over the last five innings, Hawkeye pitchers allowed just two baserunners. Jack Young threw a seven pitch tenth inning and struck out two hitters. Transfers Reece Beuter (DBU), Justin Hackett (TCU) and Ganon Archer (Kirkwood) struck out eight of the last nine batters of the game.
