Spencer Petras headed to Utah State

Former Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras has found a new home. Petras announced on Sunday that he would be transferring to Utah State. Ironically, this past season the Hawkeyes opened their season playing the Aggies, beating them 24-14.
Petras was three star recruit to Iowa in the Class of 2018. After serving as Nate Stanley’s backup, he became the starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes in the 2020 season. Of course, that was an incredibly challenging season in college football due to Covid-19.
Iowa played eight games that season. Petras lost the first two games, but won their final six contests. Their final two games against Michigan and a bowl game against Missouri, were not played due to Covid issues with the Wolverines and the Tigers. Iowa finished that season ranked 16th by the Associated Press. In that year, Petras completed 57% of his throws for 1569 yards and 9 touchdowns. He also threw 5 interceptions.

In the 2021 season, Petras led Iowa to a 10-2 regular season, including a victory over then #4 Penn State. Iowa won the Big Ten West and lost to Michigan in the Big Ten title game, 42-3. Then Iowa lost a hard fought 20-17 game to Kentucky in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl. That season, Petras completed 57.3% of his passes for 1880 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also threw 9 interceptions in that season. Petras did miss basically three games that season due to injury before returning in relief of Alex Padilla at Nebraska.
Then in 2022, Petras led Iowa to an 8-5 record that season. The Hawkeyes did win their bowl game against Kentucky, but Petras saw his season end against Nebraska when he sustained a shoulder injury. That shoulder injury had kept him from potentially playing this season at another school Petras decided to remain at the University of Iowa, not as a student athlete and helped with the football program. Primarily, he signaled in plays this season to Iowa’s starting quarterbacks.
Petras will have one year of eligibility remaining.
