The third-ranked Iowa men’s wrestling team was back in action after a successful week at the Luther Open last weekend. Today, it was the Hawkeyes home opening dual at Carver-Hawkeye Arena against the #16 Oregon State Beavers. Iowa won seven of the ten matches, including six in a row at one point to earn the 25-11 ranked victory.

“Good test. I give them kudos,” said head coach Tom Brands. “I give Pendleton kudos. He is a professional. He is no slouch. He is a worthy opponent. He comes from a place where he isn’t going to roll over and let you tickle his belly. I have known him as a competitor for a long time. I knew that we had to be ready coming in here.”

The Beavers got off to a 3-0 start after #18 Brandon Kaylor picked up a close 7-6 decision over #11 Drake Ayala. The lead did not last long, as #9 Brody Teske picked up a major decision over #22 Gabe Whisenhunt. That started a stretch of six wins in a row in favor of Iowa, including a sudden victory win for #9 Victor Voinovich III over Nash Singleton in his Carver debut after transferring from Oklahoma State. The biggest win of the day for Iowa was at 174, where unranked Gabe Arnold took down #11 Travis Wittlake via decision to make it 21-3 Iowa. Oregon State picked up wins at 184 and 285, but #23 Zach Glazier picked up a ranked win over #31 Justin Rademacher at 197 and Iowa defeated the Beavers 25-11.

“I wanted this match,” said Gabe Arnold. “Past All-American, no slouch at all. I wanted it. I wanted to put on a show for the home crowd. Terry said that this match, this dual, was to put the world on notice. I put the world on notice. I am here at 174 pounds, not backing down form anything, ready for it all. Let’s do it.”
