Trent Cakerice makes college decision
In-state defensive lineman Trent Cakerice has made his college decision. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Grundy Center native is headed to the University of Iowa after accepting a preferred walk-on opportunity from the Hawkeyes this week.
Cakerice, who also had interest from Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, UNI, and Wayne State, pretty much made up his mind once the Iowa coaches extended the opportunity after their camp on June 9.
“Honestly, Iowa was the end goal,” Cakerice told HawkeyeReport.com. “Once I got the preferred walk-on opportunity, I knew I was going there.
“Some other schools were in contact and I’m thankful for their time and effort, but the Hawks seemed like the perfect scenario.”

As a junior, Cakerice had 69 tackles, 11.5 TFL, five sacks, and a pick-six as he led Grundy Center to a state championship in Class A last fall. Also a standout wrestler, he compiled a 36-6 record at heavyweight as a junior and comes in with similar traits that Iowa has had success with in the past upfront.
“Probably the biggest reason I want to play for them is their amazing defense and knowing that they do a great job at developing defensive linemen,” said Cakerice.
