Kansas State center Ugonna Onyenso will enter transfer portal
After just one season at Kansas State, junior center Ugonna Onyenso will enter the transfer portal, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. Onyenso played his first two seasons for John Calipari at Kentucky, before being one of Jerome Tang’s high-profile, NIL transfers last season.
Before K-State, Onyenso was known as a defensive threat. He also appeared to have some untapped potential. Whichever team could get him up to speed on the offensive end was going to have a serious diamond in the rough.
Despite that being the thought, it never came to fruition in Manhattan. Onyenso’s minutes dropped from 18.6 minutes per game at Kentucky to 11.1 at K-State. Most notably, Onyenso wasn’t much of a defensive weapon at K-State compared to his time at Kentucky. Blocks per 40 minutes dropped from 5.9 to 3.2.
In total, Onyenso only appeared in 24 of Kansas State’s 33 games. His best scoring output came early in the season, when he scored 16 points against Mississippi Valley State. From February 1st and on, Onyneso only scored 15 points and had 23 rebounds and 12 blocks over 11 games.
