Kansas State hires Luke Wells as tight ends coach

Kansas State has hired its tight ends coach. Former Utah State, Texas Tech and Tulsa tight ends coach Luke Wells has been hired by K-State to the same position in Manhattan. Most recently, Wells spent the last two seasons as a coach at Bixby (OK) High School where he won two state championships.
The job of tight ends coach opened at Kansas State after Brian Lepak was named offensive line coach for the Wildcats. Lepak was the former tight ends coach, but has moved to offensive line coach after Conor Riley departed to take the offensive line coach position for the Dallas Cowboys.
It is a reunion for Wells who will be joining his brother Matt Wells in Manhattan. Matt was named K-State offensive coordinator last week. The two brothers have also worked together previously at both Utah State and Texas Tech.
Luke Wells began his coaching career as a wide receiver and tight ends coach at Iowa State from 2009-2012. After his time in Ames, Wells was brought in at Utah State. From 2013-2016 Wells served as co-offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach for the Aggies before moving to quarterbacks coach in 2016. In his final two seasons at Utah State, he moved back to tight ends and inside wide receivers coach.

While in Logan, Utah he oversaw one of the best tight ends in Utah State history Wyatt Houston who is second in Aggies history in receptions, touchdowns and receiving yards for a tight end. Wells spent three seasons at Texas Tech where he coached three players to All Big 12 honors. This past season, the Oklahoma native tutored Luke McGary who was the Golden Hurricanes third leading receiver posting 17 catches for 231 yards and a touchdown.
Wells attended Oklahoma and is a native of Sallisaw, Oklahoma. He adds to what is an impressive connection to the Sooner State from the Kansas State staff with Matt Wells and Lepak. It would not be shocking to see K-State move more into Oklahoma on the recruiting trail with these moves.
WHAT KANSAS STATE HEAD COACH CHRIS KLIEMAN SAYS
“Luke brings an extensive amount of coaching experience and recruiting energy to our tight end room, which of course has been a big piece to our recent offensive success,” Klieman said. “I have known Luke for quite a while and even visited with him during previous position openings, and we are thrilled to have him and his family in our program.”
WHAT LUKE WELLS SAYS
“I am grateful for the opportunity from Coach Klieman to help this staff and be a part of the winning culture at K-State,” Wells said. “I can’t wait to get to work with our talented group of tight ends.”
