Kansas State lists Will Howard OR Avery Johnson as starting QB
Coming as a little bit of a surprise, Kansas State lists Will Howard or Avery Johnson as the starting quarterback for the TCU game. The element of shock only derives from them having the luxury of not making that change to the public depth chart and not having anyone up in arms about it.
They could have gotten away with not addressing the potential change. Instead, the K-State staff leaned straight into the quarterback question that will center around on Manhattan for the next handful of days. It’s so interesting that it has national attention.
Avery Johnson brings hype. He catches everyone’s eyes with his flare and performance. Though not to the same level or extent, he captures eyeballs and quite the audience and brings buzz and a spotlight to Manhattan, Kansas similarly to that of Deion Sanders to Boulder, Colorado.
There is a reason that I have been on five different shows on Monday to talk about a 38-21 Kansas State win over Texas Tech. It’s not because the Wildcats are 2-1 in the Big 12 and defeated a juggernaut. They’re not ranked. It’s to discuss Avery Johnson.
It is the first time that he has been on the 1-line on the K-State depth chart this season, though he still does share it with Howard. Remember, Howard quarterbacked the team that won the Big 12 championship a season ago, ironically over this week’s opponent in the Horned Frogs.

But it may be Johnson that takes the controls at the position due to his unbelievable skill-set and immense talent that is already surfacing in just year one.
He is not a local phenomenon, he’s a national one because of the recruiting hype he collected when Kansas State kept him out of the hands of Oregon, Washington, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Florida State and others.
Johnson ran for 91 yards and five scores against the Red Raiders last Saturday night and threw only one incomplete pass in nine tries for another 77 yards. He was the closer for the Wildcats, and we’ll be asking head coach Chris Klieman on Tuesday if he’s also the starter.
