Kansas State offensive MVP: Keagan Johnson

The pick will be Kansas State receiver Keagan Johnson. He was the best choice on a day where the offense did very little, especially in the second half when they only totaled three points. He finished his day with six catches for 76 yards and a score. The touchdown was a great grab by him.

Wideout Jayce Brown did have three receptions for 86 yards but also blew many of his blocks.

It was a pretty inconsistent performance from the K-State offense. On a day where teams were forced to run the ball with success, the Wildcats couldn’t do so. Particularly in the second half it was conditions where throwing the ball was less of an option. Kansas State ran for just 2.6 yards per carry. So, they threw 39 times in a driving rainstorm.

Avery Johnson ended up with 238 yards, but he threw two key interceptions. The first interception gave Houston some life after being up 19-10 with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Johnson’s second pick came in a two-minute situation with K-State down 24-19.

Defensive MVP: Austin Romaine

While the Kansas State defense was fairly solid, they gave up too many explosives. Austin Romaine once again led the Wildcats in tackles with 12, including 2.5 for a loss. He came up really big in the running game and continually got involved in making tackles around the line of scrimmage.

Brendan Mott and Tobi Osunsanmi provided some big plays off the edge as well.

Mott recorded seven tackles and a sack. The senior’s sack brings him to eight on the season and is putting him very much in contention for Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year and nearing the K-State single-season record.

Osunsanmi recorded a sack and forced a fumble, which looked to be a big play in the game. It came with little time remaining in the first half and set up a Kansas State touchdown to take the lead before heading to the break.

K-State special teams MVP: Chris Tennant

Like most things in the game in Houston, the special teams was a bit of a disaster. Dylan Edwards muffed a kickoff and recovered it, Mason Olguin was benched because of two poor snaps and Simon McClannan struggled punting.

Chris Tennant kind of gets this award by default, but his 47 yard kick to make it 19-10 K-State was impressive.
