Rapid Recap: Kansas State LB Asa Newsom out for season
Kansas State health updates
Kansas State walked away with some injuries in the Sunflower Showdown. Redshirt freshman linebacker Asa Newsom went down with a non-contact injury on the opening kickoff. K-State head coach Chris Klieman shared Newsom is out for the rest of the season with the injury. The Wildcats are now down two reserve linebackers with Beau Palmer also being out for the season.
As of now, Klieman would not rule anyone else out for this Saturday at Houston. However, there are going to be some players who do not practice much during the week to rest. The Kansas State head coach was also dealing with an illness Saturday night and Sunday, but is now feeling better.
Continued offensive growth
K-State has started to show some major strides on offense. The Wildcat offense is currently No. 2 in the Big 12 in points per drive. Kansas State is showing much better balance in the last few weeks and throwing the ball better than they had at the beginning of the season. Avery Johnson has thrown for at least 224 yards in the last four contests and continues to look better and better each game.
One area where Klieman would like to see the Wildcats improve is on early downs. Kansas State has been in a lot of third and long situations in the last few weeks. For K-State to improve, they have to be better on early downs to be on more third and mediums and third and shorts.

A look at Houston
The Wildcats are back on the road for the third time in four weeks with a road trip to Houston Saturday afternoon. The Cougars have won two of their last three games. A main contributor to the wins has been not turning the ball over. Houston turned it over four times in the loss to Kansas which got out of hand for the Cougars. In the two wins versus Utah and TCU, Houston did not turn the ball over.
In the last few weeks, Willie Fritz’s team has started to establish an identity. It took a bit for the team to get his culture, but the Cougars have turned it around recently. Now they are starting to be able to run the ball at a higher level and stopping opposing teams running game. Houston has also used multiple quarterbacks this season, Zeon Chriss is more of a runner whereas Donovan Smith is more of a pure passer who can run and has played against K-State many times in his career.
