Kansas State’s inability to sustain drives

Kansas State has had a bit of an issue the last few weeks sustaining drives on offense. The inconsistently plagued them during the Houston game and also bit them against Arizona State as well. It has shown up emphatically in the red zone and with turnovers.

K-State was 2 of 5 in the red zone against the Sun Devils Saturday. That also does not include a fumble by Jayce Brown at the Arizona State 30 yard line.

Kansas State offensive coordinator Conor Riley believes the inability to sustain drives stems from an inability to rush the football on early downs and early in games. The adjustment seems to be calling more plays on the perimeter and getting players out in space.

State of the offense

The Wildcats’ offense also has not gotten off to fast starts. Starting faster is a must this week according to the play-caller. Part of starting faster is all about mentality. Riley thinks his offense had an issue with mentality and struggled to take the game one play at a time and instead pressed.

The pressing led to getting too tight and playing with more anxiety. Despite how the game went last week, the K-State offensive coordinator was still pleased with how hard the team was playing.

Health notes

Kansas State wide receiver Keagan Johnson was injured during warm-ups Saturday against Arizona State and did not play. Running back Dylan Edwards was injured on a run in the first half and did not re-enter the game.

Both of their status’ remain unknown at this point. However, both are improving but K-State will not know if either will be able to play until late Thursday and into Friday.

Edwards was begging the Wildcats’ coaches to let him go back in the game in the second half when trailing 24-0. That shows what kind of player he is but also the competitiveness and fire that he has as well.
