Rapid Recap: Kansas State keeps Houston off the board
Kansas State defense clicking
The Kansas State defense has been playing at an elite level the last three weeks.
In the last nine quarters, they have not allowed a touchdown and have not allowed an opponent in the end zone at Bill Snyder Family Stadium since September 23. Senior safety Kobe Savage said it feels good and the vibes are spreading throughout the roster.
One of the changes is that they are practicing how they play and preaching good preparation. Winning during the week translates to winning on Saturdays. K-State is doing so at a very high level and with the strong leverage needed for their 3-3-5 scheme.
Kansas State also knew it was important to stop Donovan Smith. It was the third time Smith has played the Wildcats, so they were familiar with the Houston signal caller. He threw for less than 100 yards and barely more than three yards per attempt.
Defensive mentality
Sticking with the K-State defense, the mentality seems to have changed over the last few weeks. There is more energy and swagger from that side of the ball, specifically in the secondary. Their mind is on the ball and they’re playing much faster.
Savage noted that senior linebacker Daniel Green is still a major leader for the unit, even though he has been injured and has been ruled out for the season. Green’s message is to play hard and play for your brother next to you.

Offensive adjustment from K-State
We were told earlier in the week by guys like head Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman and quarterback Will Howard that Houston changed things up a lot on the defensive side of the ball versus Texas.
Their fronts and schemes have shifted. Because of that, we assumed that the Wildcats saw what they were expecting from the Cougars given the instant offensive success. That actually wasn’t the case according to the K-State signal caller.
Houston’s scheme forced Kansas State to quickly adjust the plan, but it all worked out for Collin Klein and the Wildcat offense. K-State actually had an added advantage of their own defensive scheme being similar to the one deployed by Houston.
