Rapid recap: Kansas State looking for more in run game

Kansas State run game
Kansas State’s run game has been one of the best in the Big 12 all season. However, the run game has not been as successful in the last two weeks. K-State has really been relying on the explosive run play, especially versus Kansas where the Wildcats had two runs for more than 40 yards. Kansas State offensive coordinator Conor Riley wants more consistency in the run game. It is all some perspective because the Wildcats have been so good in the run game, but he wants more consistency this week versus Houston.
Some of the clunkiness has been due to good defense. West Virginia stacked the box to take away the run game and Kansas was making good plays. However, some has been due to execution and not staying on blocks and some has been due to not calling plays at the correct times when the blitz comes.

Offensive line leaders
After replacing almost the entire offensive line from last season, Kansas State was looking for new leaders in the unit. Two players have really emerged as leaders for the K-State offensive line. Taylor Poitier and Hadley Panzer are becoming major leaders for the unit. Poitier is one of the biggest leaders on the entire team and is becoming more vocal and his play is backing up how vocal he has been. After Panzer was injured in the West Virginia game, Riley was planning on easing the senior guard in more versus the Jayhawks. However, Panzer told Riley he did not want to come out of the game.
K-State mentality
Kansas State is right in the thick of the Big 12 race. It could be easy for players and coaches to fall into the trap of looking at the standings. However, Riley has been preaching to the Wildcats to control what they can control. Kansas State cannot control what happens three weeks from now. If you are looking down the road that is when you are going to have a bump.
