Rapid Recap: Kansas State's QB run game, Riley on the field
Kansas State QB run game
Kansas State was able to run quarterback Avery Johnson more Saturday versus Cincinnati. He totaled 10 carries which was the most he has had since the Kansas game on October 26th. Johnson was also effective with his carries, with 72 yards on the ground which was the third most amount of yards he has had rushing in a game this season.
His runs versus the Bearcats opened things up for K-State’s offense Saturday. Johnson has been a bit banged up since the Colorado game. Because of that, Kansas State had to be more smart with how they used the sophomore quarterback on the ground. K-State wanted to let Johnson get more healthy and he was more healthy, and because of that, it equated to more explosiveness against Cincinnati.
Making the change with Riley
It is no secret Conor Riley made a change to call plays on the field Saturday. Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman knew there was going to be good energy versus Cincinnati anyway due to the two losses in a row. However, having Riley on the field brought even more energy.
The K-State offense was really in tune and there was even more communication having him on the field. A key was having the Microsoft Surfaces on the field to be able to look at certain plays throughout the game. It has helped the Wildcats’ defense with defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman on the field and for the first time was really able to help the offense. It is not a major surprise, but Riley will also call the game from the field versus Iowa State.

A look at Iowa State
Klieman was extremely complimentary of Iowa State leading up to the game Saturday. The Cyclones know Kansas State well and K-State knows Iowa State well. Even down to the players, both teams recruit a lot of the same players.
The Wildcats coach thinks the Cyclones have the best duo of wide receivers in the Big 12 and is extremely impressed with Rocco Becht. The sophomore quarterback is the straw that stirs the drink for Iowa State. He gets Iowa State in the right checks and calls and has a high football IQ.
