The kick to give Kansas State the win

Kansas State won its 16th consecutive game versus Kansas in thrilling fashion. It was a game winning 51-yard field goal by Chris Tennant to give K-State a 29-27 lead with 1:42 to go. The kick tied a career long for the senior kicker, which he set in his freshman season.

Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman knew the moment his kicker went out on the field he was going to send it through the uprights.

Tennant has been practicing well the last month and is continuing to translate it into games. He has made 12 of his 14 field goals this season. An adjustment K-State has made to keep Tennant’s leg fresh has been to have Simon McClannan kick off and allow Tennant to only handle field goals and extra points.

Defensive adjustment from K-State

It was not the best game for the Kansas State defense. The Wildcats struggled to get stops and get off the field. Kansas converted seven of its first eight third down attempts. An adjustment K-State made in the fourth quarter was to continually bring pressure.

Jalon Daniels had to deal with the blitz the entire fourth quarter. Defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman chose to constantly send pressure and just play man coverage.

Opportunties missed

The Sunflower Showdown was not a crisp game. There were three total turnovers and both teams left some points out on the field. Avery Johnson and Will Anciaux could not connect on a third down in the red zone. Johnson also had a fumble in the red zone.

Kansas made a mistake on a kickoff catching the ball and falling out of bounds. The kickoff led to a safety, which was one of the turning points of the game for Kansas State. Quentin Skinner also dropped an easy score earlier in the game.
