We spoke to several Kansas State players after the game and gathered everything we heard.

Kansas State praises Troy

Kansas State quarterback Will Howard had some very strong words for Troy, especially on the defensive side of the ball. He called the Trojan defense one of the best units he has faced in his career. Troy has some good pass rushers and they got to Howard at times.

Not only that, there were times that he and the Wildcats struggled to know what the Trojans were doing because of how complex they were and the disguises that they showed the K-State offense. It was a great early test.

It was also a game that Howard believes Kansas State needed to have, which was just echoing the words of head coach Chris Klieman. K-State faced adversity and overcame it. It was not always easy at times for the Wildcat offense, but they learned from it and cleared the hurdles.

Phillip Brooks breaks out

Senior wideout Phillip Brooks had a very good game versus the Trojans. It was one of his best performances of his six-year career. He collected 94 yards receiving, which is the second most for him ever and it was his first game with two touchdowns from scrimmage.

Where Brooks has really grown this year is as a leader. He is the older statesman of the group and has developed a real voice in the locker room. It is a Kansas State position group that was in search of that after losing Malik Knowles and Kade Warner from last year’s squad.

4 over 4

The sign of a strong culture is when the items that are stressed and emphasized by the coaches are also what we hear from the players. But not only that, it is carried out in the games. We saw that from K-State against Troy.

A common answer during the postgame media availability was the ‘4 over 4’ mantra that refers to the final four minutes of the first half and the first four of the second half. The Kansas State staff met and chose to attack that in the offseason because they believed it held them back last year.

After emphasizing it, specifically Klieman and strength coach Trumain Carroll, it bred success as soon as game two. K-State produced a crucial score when Howard found Brooks and was sprung for a touchdown via a great block by Jadon Jackson.

The second half was the response from the Kansas State defense, which was outstanding for the most part.
