Kansas State penalties

Going into Saturday, Kansas State offensive coordinator Conor Riley highlighted penalties as a key for his offense. The K-State offense had eight penalties for 50 yards in the game. Six of the penalties were pre-snap and three were in the red zone. Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman called the penalties a “big-time factor.” The timing of the penalties was as big of a factor as much as the total. DJ Giddens had a 30-yard run called back due to an illegal formation and Avery Johnson had a touchdown run called back as well.

What’s next?

After losing 38-9 it is a worthy question to ask, what is next? Klieman said this next week we are going to find out what Kansas State is made of. K-State was embarrassed Saturday night in Provo for the first time since the 2020 season. The Wildcats have players who have invested a ton in the program and came back for this season and invested a lot in this season. Klieman is confident his leaders will stand up and is excited to see how the leaders of the team respond.

End of the first half

Kansas State was up 6-3 with 1:15 to go first half. However, Giddens fumbled and BYU ran it back and returned it for a touchdown. Then, Johnson threw his second interception of the year and the Cougars scored another touchdown. It went from 6-3 to 17-6 BYU at halftime in less than one minute of game time. K-State was playing well in the first 28 minutes of the half, however, once the two-minute mark hit the Wildcats did not play well in any phase.

Kansas State did not do anything well in the second half and continued to beat themselves. Remember, BYU scored after another Johnson interception to begin the second half and ran a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown.
