Kenny Brooks and Kentucky have secured their first commitment of the 2026 class.

On Saturday, four-star point guard Maddyn Greenway committed to Kentucky over Stanford, UCLA, Duke, Clemson and Iowa. She talked about her decision with KSR.

It goes without saying, but the Greenway last name has very strong ties to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Both of her parents were star athletes at Iowa, and her father, Chad, went on to have a decade-plus career playing linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings.

Greenway was always fond of Iowa — and she still is — but after following her parents’ footsteps her whole life up until this point, she decided it was time for her to create a legacy of her own elsewhere.

“I’ve been a Hawkeye fan my whole life, with both my parents having gone there,” Greenway told KSR. “Obviously, with my dad, I’ve lived in Minnesota my whole life, and I’ve always been under his shadow, so I just wanted to make my own path.”

The No. 18 player in the class has built a very strong relationship with Kenny Brooks. In fact, it’s “probably the best connection” that Greenway had between all the coaches in her Top 6. That’s because their relationship goes beyond the hardwood.

“We talk about everything,” Greenway said. “Obviously, I do two other sports pretty competitively. So, sometimes we’ll talk about that. Like, whatever season I’m in, we’ll always talk about, you know, he came up for one of my soccer games, so we chatted a lot about that whenever we talked. He stays connected with that. But a lot of the times, we’ll talk about basketball here and there, but it’s things outside of sports or like, how I’m doing, which is what I love. I love how it’s not just so basketball focused.”

She added, “It really feels like we’re building a relationship outside of just the basketball piece of it, which I think is something I really like try to focus on, especially because I do a lot of things outside of it. We talked a lot during AAU season. Obviously, talked a lot about what I’ve been looking to improve on, how I felt the season was going. He seems very connected with me. So, it’s really good.”

Speaking of Brooks, Greenway loves the way that he utilizes Georgia Amoore. Like Amoore, Greenway is a smaller guard who has to use her craftiness to be able to score.

“[Georgia Amoore is] someone who, as a point guard, I really try to replicate my game after,” the 5-foot-8 guard revealed. “Obviously, she’s undersized, I’m undersized.”

Greenway continued, “I just love how she plays, and I think we play pretty similar. I was talking with her on my visit because she was showing me around and trying to make me feel welcome, and she was saying that when he brought her out of high school, he took her, really grown her game. She was like, ‘you’re steps ahead of where I was’. She was like ‘I can say that confidently’. I was like, that’s just cool to see if he can take, you know, he can transform anyone and into what she’s become. It’s amazing to see.”

What was the Top 20 prospect looking for in a school? A culture that allows her to thrive both on and off the court.

“Obviously, I want to compete and win,” Greenway explained. “I think conference has a huge like part of that. Then, I would say people is a huge thing for me; coaching staff, players, people around, like the basketball community. I think that’s huge because something happens, like heaven forbid, injury or whatever, and/or basketball is just not going well in the moment, having the people around you is huge for me. Here [at home], like on my AAU team and high school team, I have a really strong connection with all the people, so I think that’s something I and my family really want to make sure that college has. The, I would say just making sure I can become the best player I can be. My goals are the WNBA and just really transforming into a player that could play at that level. I think a combination of all that is something I truly look for.”

And she found that with Kenny Brooks and Kentucky.

Following her decision, she had a message for Big Blue Nation:

“I’m just really excited to be there. Coach Brooks is building something special down there, and I just can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Welcome to UK, Maddyn Greenway.
