Issac “Spike” Sowells Jr. — one of the top-rated players from the Bluegrass State — is inching closer to his final decision. The three-star offensive lineman (ranked No. 534 from the 2025 class by the On3 Industry Ranking) will announcement his commitment on Thursday, July 18.

The 6-foot-2, 290-pound center out of Louisville Male High School is coming off four June official visits. Sowells started his tour of visits at South Carolina before stopping at (in order) Kentucky, Miami, and NC State. The nearby Louisville Cardinals were originally among his group of finalists, but after a previously scheduled official visit was called off, Jeff Brohm’s program is no longer in consideration.

Now roughly three weeks out from a decision, the four schools he visited are the ones in contention to land his talents. Sowells spoke with KSR on Monday to update us on where things stand with his recruitment. Of course, Kentucky, led by associate head coach Vince Marrow and offensive line coach Eric Wolford, has made a strong pitch.

“Just how they see me fitting in at Kentucky, me being a hometown kid, how I could prosper there,” Sowells said of his conversations with UK. “Just the way I can lead their team into the right direction.

“I’d be the leader of the o-line and help elevate my teammates around me,” he added.

During his official visit to Lexington, Sowells was able to hang out with the likes of freshman Aba Selm along with class of 2025 commits Tucker Kattus and Darrin Strey — all offensive lineman. Kentucky is recruiting him as a center. Marrow’s pitch heading down the final stretch?

What would the reason be for leaving (the state of) Kentucky? Just everything I have here, why leave?” Sowells said Marrow told him.

Sowells also provided his thoughts on the other three schools in the mix.

NC State: “It was a great time down there. Just how I can shape their offense for the future. Come in and compete and have potential to be a freshman All-American. Gotta put in the work and the time but just help build something special down there.”

South Carolina: “Out of all those schools, they’re the one whose o-line room I’ve had the most contact with. (Class of 2024 commits) Josiah Thompson, Kam Pringle, and Blake Franks, I’ve been talking to them for a while, just kept in contact — some guards and tackles who could help me prosper.”

Miami: “Just their deep-rooted love for offensive line. Coach (Alex) Mirabal, Coach (Mario) Cristobal both played o-line. Cristobal played o-line at Miami, he’s coached there a long time. Coach Mirabal has coached o-line for a long time. He coached the highest-paid tackle in the NFL, multiple NFL guys, and just the connections that Miami has to offer — during football and after football.”
