BTI's Rants and Ramblings: Forgotten UK Tournament Classics, Part 2

by:Bryan1303/16/21
This week, to try and help the depression of Kentucky not being in this year's NCAA Tournament, I dig into the archives to find some of UK's most forgotten NCAA classics.  We know all of the most memorable games: 1998 Duke, 2011 Ohio State, the whole 2014 run.  But there are so many great games that modern UK teams have played that just don't go mentioned for a variety of reasons. Today I take us back to Year 3 of the Tubby Smith era and UK's first round clash with Saint Bonaventure.  This game rarely gets mentioned as an NCAA classic and I think that's because that team was so unliked by the fans following an incredible almost 10-year run.  The 5th seeded Cats were nearly unwatchable for stretches that season, had behavioral issues, and flamed out in the first round of the SEC Tournament.  So the momentum wasn't there for the Cats coming into this game in Cleveland. It turned into quite the game.  It was the first UK tournament game to ever go into double overtime and still stands as one of only two.  After the Cats fell behind by 10 early they actually got to an 8-point halftime lead and stretched it out to 11 at one point in the 2nd half.  But the Bonnies made a great comeback and led by 3 with under 20 seconds to go.  But like 1999 against Kansas, UK buried a 3 to tie the game and send it to overtime. The the Cats blew a large lead in overtime, fouling three point shooters twice with under a minute to go, including with 0.4 seconds left.  The Bonnies hit all 3 and sent the game to double overtime.  But UK was able to make enough stops to pull out the game.  They would go on to lose the next round to Syracuse, putting up a whopping 50 points in the process. So this game often gets forgotten but it truly was a great game.  So take a minute and remember this UK classic: MONDAY: 1999, Kentucky over Kansas in overtime
