1. The Wildcat Worked
Heading into the game, he didn't expect to see success from the Wildcat formation against Georgia. Once the game got rolling, he told Eddie Gran, "Make them prove it."
Georgia showed they couldn't stop it on UK's final drive of the game until UK arrived in the red zone. Stoops said they had to stick with what got them there.
"Had we abandoned it on first or second down, people would kill you. We were gonna scratch where it itches."
2. Stoops Used A Cal-ism
Who knew Calipari and Stoops were so close?
Cal spoke with Stoops after Saturday night's tough loss. Today Stoops used a little Cal-speak,
"demonstrated performance." They've made some big plays in big situations, but they came up short on Saturday. Stoops knows his team is ready to turn the corner soon.
"We had an opportunity to do something that hadn't been done in 40 years," Stoops said. "If we put ourselves in that position again and again, we're going to make em."
3. UK's Weekly Routine
- Monday: The week begins with a team meeting, revisiting the film in its entirety. They have a special teams meeting before the offense and defense split up. They return as a team to introduce the next opponent, watch some of their tape, then hit the practice field for an hour and ten minutes.
- Tuesday/Wednesday: These are fully padded practices, the most intense of the week. Tuesday involves first and second down with more situations, where Wednesday features much of the same, with the addition of third down offense and defense.
- Thursday/Friday: Most teams have a run-thru on Thursday and a walk-thru on Friday. Stoops switches it up, going harder on Friday with a run-thru after a Thursday walk-thru.
4. A Caller Called Gran's Shot
Last week a caller asked if Mark Stoops ever considered
using Benny Snell and Boom Williams in the same formation. UK started the first and second half with the Benny and Boom in the same formation. Stoops said it wasn't because of the caller, but when Gran told him about the new package, "It put a smile on my face."
5. Nate from Williamsburg's Got Jokes
Nate form Williamsburg was happy to share his experience from Saturday's game. He described it as the best atmosphere he's ever seen at Commonwealth Stadium, although he's only been four times. In those four games, he's never seen a win.
"Stay away," Stoops joked. The caller responded: "I want to apologize in advance because I plan on buying season tickets next year."
