Anthony Davis' ankle proves how lucky Kentucky has been

Anthony Davis had just stepped out of Kentucky, and hadn’t been on his new Hornets team for more than a week before he suffered a sprained ankle. It is a terrible break for Davis while he was working towards making Team USA for the London Olympics, but it perfectly showcases how lucky Kentucky and John Calipari have been throughout the past three seasons at avoiding the injury bug. A guy who calls himself “Mr. SEC” writes on just how fortunate UK has been with Calipari, not only getting his players to buy into his system, but having lady luck on his side.
Kentucky has avoided major injuries during their rapid rise. The fact that Davis left UK and almost immediately suffered a severely sprained ankle illuminates the fact that nothing like that happened while in Lexington. No blown out knees. No ankles that take the team’s top player — Davis, for example — out of the line-up for an extended stretch of games. All championship caliber teams need some luck to stay healthy and UK has had that luck when it comes to their most important players.
Now I won’t let us forget about Sam Malone or Jon Hood. They each suffered devastating injuries and it’s terrible that their recovery was so extensive. But the star power over the last three seasons remained healthy and intact for the long haul. Look around at the Robbie Hummel’s, Kendall Marshall’s, and entire Louisville basketball team. To not suffer a significant injury to a key player is mind-boggling. Credit the luck to Calipari’s intuition, player’s determination, or those in the heavens simply being Wildcat fans. Whatever the reason, the magical run as a Kentucky fan marches on. Knock on wood.
