Antonio Reeves, Reed Sheppard sweep SEC Weekly Awards

Get out your brooms, because we’ve got a sweep to celebrate. Two Kentucky Wildcats are being honored for their performances in the wins over Vanderbilt and No. 4 Tennessee. Antonio Reeves was named SEC Co-Player of the Week, sharing the award with Texas A&M’s Manny Obaseki. Reed Sheppard won SEC Freshman of the Week, his second straight such honor and fourth this season.

Reeves is the first Wildcat to win SEC Player of the Week this season. He averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists last week and extended his streak of 20-point games to seven, the longest such stretch since Jamal Murray scored 20+ in 12 straight games during the 2015-16 season. Reeves had 27 points and a team-high 7 rebounds vs. Tennessee. He’s averaging 20.2 points per game, which edges out Murray as the leading scorer of the John Calipari era.

Sheppard also had 27 points in Kentucky’s 85-81 upset of the No. 4 Vols, hitting seven threes to go along with six assists and five rebounds. A few days earlier, he tied a career-high with 11 assists vs. Vanderbilt. He is the first player in Kentucky history with three games of at least 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists in a single season. He’s also the first player in the Calipari Era with three 25+ point games off the bench in one season.

This is the first time this season Kentucky has swept the SEC Weekly Awards. The postseason honors will be announced later today. I have a feeling Reeves and Sheppard will win some of those too.
