Murray State’s Cinderella story in the College World Series is over. The Racers ran into Arkansas in a loser-leaves-town match Monday afternoon, only to fall on the losing end of the third no-hitter in CWS history.

Arkansas starting pitcher Gage Wood was incredible in the win. He retired the first 23 Murray State batters until a hit-by-pitch walk in the bottom of the eighth inning. Wood finished off the Racers with 19 strikeouts in a no-hitter, the first no-hitter in the CWS since 1960.

“I really wish I hadn’t hit that guy,” Wood admitted in his postgame interview on ESPN. His one HBP cost him the CWS’s first-ever perfect game.

Murray State’s historic season

Murray State was eliminated from the tournament at the hands of Gage Wood’s historic day on the mound, but Murray has its own history to celebrate once the pain of defeat eases. To name a few:

  • The Racers made their first College World Series appearance in school history
  • Only the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history
  • The first Missouri Valley Conference team to reach Omaha since Missouri State in 2003
  • Only the fourth regional No. 4 seed to make it to Omaha since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1999
  • Jonathan Hogart tied Murray’s season record with 22 home runs
  • Carson Garner tied the school record for career RBI (189)
  • Program records for AB, Runs, Hits, 2B, 3B, RBI, Games, Wins and pitching strikeouts
  • A school-record 61 games played (44-17)

After the season-ending loss, Murray State head coach Dan Skirka had the right perspective, saying more than one team will leave Omaha happy this year:
