Armando Bacot Fires Saint Peter's Stray at Kentucky
Every once in a while a clip hits the internet that you initially ignore. You ignore it again and again, until it’s impossible to ignore. Folks are talking about it on the World Wide Web. It’s about the Kentucky Wildcats. It’s gotta be on Kentucky Sports Radio dot com.
Armando Bacot faced Kentucky three times in his 17-year college basketball career. He only won once, in an empty arena during the pandemic. The Wildcats defeated the Tar Heels 98-69 in the 2021-22 season. Sahvir Wheeler had 26 points, while Oscar Tshiebwe posted 16 and 12 in the Las Vegas victory. Oscar and Bacot are friends who attended the Kentucky Derby together, yet Bacot still felt the need to throw a stray his way today.
Bacot passed a North Carolina rite of passage by joining former Tar Heel Theo Pinson on the Run Your Race Podcast. Their run to the Final Four in 2022 was a topic of conversation and well, this happened.
To be clear, Kentucky beat Bacot multiple times in his career. Even so, that statement hits a sore spot with this Kentucky basketball fan.
There’s something about the loss to Saint Peter’s that still hits a nerve. Kentucky has a more recent first round loss in the NCAA Tournament. Jack Gohlke rubbed our noses in it more so than any of the Peacocks, but I can laugh about it now. It set the wheels in motion for John Calipari’s departure, helping Big Blue Nation turn a page.

Despite that, the Saint Peter’s loss is a touchy subject. Maybe it’s because Kentucky should have been able to close out that game. It was there for the taking and they let it slip through their fingers. Maybe it’s because the Cats had the National Player of the Year who had earned a March moment. Why hasn’t that shock worn off? Am I alone?
For some reason, the Saint Peter’s loss still makes me wince in the same way that Frank Kaminsky or Luke Maye do every time I hear their name. It’s a stain on the soul of BBN that isn’t going away anytime soon.
