Asia Boone's sister, Jazmen, was a thorn in Kenny Brooks' side in his days at James Madison

Kenny Brooks scouted against Asia Boone ahead of Kentucky’s game against Liberty in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this past season, but unfortunately for the Flames, Boone went down with a foot injury just five minutes into the game. Brooks told KSR that Boone “will be ready to go this summer”, despite her injury.

Of course, going into that game, Brooks anticipated having to gameplan against one of the best guards in Conference USA. Averaging 10.2 points per game on 36.9% shooting from deep, the 5-foot-8 guard could have very well prepared Liberty to a win if she were healthy for the duration of that game.

For Brooks, there was probably a sense of deja vu when he was watching Liberty’s tape, and specifically Boone. Why, you may ask? Well, he had to coach against her sister, Jazmen, back when he was at James Madison.

“I’ve had the pleasure of coaching against Asia’s sister, so there was some familiarity,” Brooks told KSR in his interview on The Memorial Memo. “When I was at James Madison, her sister played for William & Mary, and Asia’s different from her sister. She’s a pure shooter, great potential as a combo guard. She’ll give us some backup minutes at point guard, but also, out on the perimeter, she can really shoot the basketball.”

Jazmen was a two-time CAA All-Defensive guard for the Tribe from 2011-15. She averaged 8.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for her career, but some of her best outings came against Brooks and the Dukes.

When she saw a leap in production her junior year, Jazmen would put up 16 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists in their first meeting that year. When William & Mary and James Madison met just weeks later, she had eight points in 30 minutes of action.

Her senior season, Jazmen had 13 points and then 16 points and against James Madison, shooting a combined 11-19 (58%) in the two matchups. Brooks and his teams went 4-0 against Jazmen’s William & Mary squads, but Asia’s big sister certainly gave him some fits along the way.

As much as a headache Jazmen was for Kenny, hopefully, that’s what it’s like for opposing coaches to scout against Asia. Then, Brooks can actually enjoy watching a Boone light it up on the court.
