Barry Slice's Golf Trail: Lincoln Trail

This week’s stop on Barry Slice’s Golf Trail lies amidst the knobs of central Kentucky at Lincoln Trail Golf Course. Very different from the courses covered in previous weeks, Lincoln Trail is a whole other test of golf. It is a course that demands strategic thinking and plenty of patience. If you aren’t accurate at this place, you may be in for a long day.

Lincoln Trail is built into the hills of Hardin County so naturally there’s a ton of elevation changes and uphill approach shots. It has Zoysia grass tees and fairways that lead to approaches into bent grass greens. Every time I’ve played the course the greens have rolled true and absolutely lightning fast. Putting is a challenge at Lincoln Trail because in addition to having quick surfaces the greens slope with the hills the course was built on. Keeping the ball below the hole is crucial.

Measuring only 6,500 yards from the tips, it isn’t a long course but man, it is quirky. In addition to challenging greens, the course’s tee shots require meticulous shot making and accuracy. I counted nearly 12 holes that feature doglegs with tree lined fairways, so being in position off the tee is the most important thing if you’re looking to shoot a low score. Iron off the tee is the smart play on multiple holes. If you enjoy bombing driver off the tee, Lincoln Trail is not for you.

There is a driving range on property, along with a practice green, so you can warm up before your round. Lincoln Trail is a semi-private course, so it is open to the public but memberships are available. You can book tee times online for $30.00 during the week and $35.00 on the weekends plus cart fee if you choose to ride. It’s central location makes for a reasonable trip from almost anywhere in the state.

I recommend Lincoln Trail if you are down for a test of accuracy and course management. If possible, try to play with at least one person who has played the course before, going into this course blind could lead to a long day of high scores. The courses old style layout is a nice change of a pace and can be a joy for golfers who enjoy the strategic aspect of the game.
