BBNBA: Anthony Davis outbattles Tyrese Maxey in Lakers win

I may be unique in BBN, but I like the BBNBA. Seeing old ‘Cats do work every night brings me an odd sense of both paternal pride and childlike nostalgia. Having said that, I have to admit that it feels a little icky writing about how former Kentucky players played in the NBA last night after hearing John Calipari point to the success of his players in the NBA following the ‘Cats heartbreaking loss to Oakland in the NCAA tournament. But alas, here we are.

The NBA nightcap on Friday featured two former Kentucky players going at it. In the end, Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers got the better of Tyrese Maxey and the Philadelphia 76ers 101-94 but both of the old Wildcats shined.

Davis, the last remaining player to win a National Championship with Kentucky who is still in the League, finished the game with a monstrous 23 points, 19 rebounds, and four blocks. It was as if he said, “This is my stage.”

One of Davis’s blocks came via a volleyball spike on a Tyrese Maxey drive. Maxey, who never got his shot at an NCAA tournament run, put up a game-high 27 points and had three steals. Maxey was 9-17 from inside the arc, but only 1-9 from 3, which led to another loss for the 76ers, who were once again without Joel Embiid.

Other BBNBA Notes:

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had another ho-hum big night for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He nearly messed around and got a triple-double, finishing with 23 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists. Cason Wallace scored double-digits himself with 12.
  • Bam Adebayo had a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Heat to beat the Pelicans.
  • Brandon Boston Jr. got some run in a blowout Clippers win over the Trail Blazers. The former ‘Cat played 19 minutes and scored nine points.
  • It wasn’t the best night for Keldon Johnson, who had eight points and eight boards in the Spurs’ loss to the Grizzlies. Every time San Antonio loses, I can’t help but think if they will take Reed Sheppard No. 1 overall in the draft.
