It was a full slate of NBA action on Friday night with 12 games on the schedule, all of them counting towards the NBA Cup (otherwise known as the In-Season Tournament). We saw 15 former Kentucky Wildcats take the floor, with several of them having huge performances. But none were bigger than what De’Aaron Fox did to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Fox, now in his eighth season with the Sacramento Kings, broke some personal and franchise records with his 60-point (yes, SIXTY!) outing against Julius Randle and the Wolves. It ultimately came in an overtime loss, 130-126, but Fox was borderline unstoppable. 26 of his points came in the fourth quarter and overtime as he was without his backcourt running mate, Malik Monk, due to an ankle injury.

Fox’s 60 points set a personal scoring record and the franchise scoring record. It’s also the most points scored in a single NBA game this season. He had a chance to tie the game in overtime but missed a floater in the closing minute. Fox shot 22-35 from the field and 6-10 from deep. He also chipped in seven assists, three rebounds, and three steals (with six turnovers).

“I’ve been a fan of his for a long time,” Timberwolves All-Star guard Anthony Edwards said postgame. “Just watching him, I always feel like he’s underrated, underappreciated by everybody. He showed it today who he is. To me, he’s one of the best point guards in the league. And he showed it, man.”

It was actually Randle who broke the tie in overtime with a layup and under a minute left in the game. The All-Star big man finished with 26 points, five assists, four rebounds, and four turnovers on 8-20 shooting (2-7 from deep). Edwards led the way for Minnesota with 36 points.

Elsewhere, Trey Lyles added seven points and eight rebounds for the Kings while rookie Rob Dillingham failed to record any stats during his three minutes of action for the Wolves.

And oh yeah, Anthony Davis went for 40

Not to be completely outdone by his fellow Kentucky alum, Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis dropped a 40-burger in a 120-115 win against the San Antonio Spurs. Davis was efficient in reaching his 40 points, going 14-26 from the field and 2-4 from distance. He also hauled in 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. He was aided by a fourth straight triple-double by LeBron James. Jarred Vanderbilt has still yet to play for the Lakers this season due to a nagging foot injury.

The Lakers move to an 8-4 record and Davis might just be a legitimate MVP candidate at this early stage in the season. Basketball-Reference has him with the fourth-highest percentage chance (one spot behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) to win MVP. However, beating out Denver’s Nikola Jokic will prove to be another tough challenge for any MVP candidate this season.

On the losing side, Keldon Johnson finished with 12 points and four rebounds for the Spurs. Victor Wembanyama had another great stat line: 28 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.

Big games in big wins for Bam, SGA

Bam Adebayo and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had huge nights for their respective teams in wins. Adebayo led the Miami Heat to a 124-111 victory over the Isaiah Jackson-less Indiana Pacers (Jackson is out with a calf injury) while Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 99-83 over Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns.

We’ll start with Adebayo, who stuffed the stat sheet with 30 points (17 in the fourth quarter), 11 rebounds, seven rebounds, and five steals. He shot 10-17 from the floor and 2-3 from deep. His Kentucky teammate, Tyler Herro, registered 20 points (6-16 FG), five assists, and three rebounds in the Heat win, as well.

As for Gilgeous-Alexander, he dropped in 28 points, six rebounds, and four rebounds on 11-25 shooting (2-7 from three) for the Thunder. Cason Wallace, who started alongside SGA, added five points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal. The Suns were without both Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal in the loss, putting extra responsibility on the shoulders of Booker, who struggled with the added weight. He scored just 12 points on 2-10 shooting with four rebounds and four assists. OKC led by as many as 18 points by the second quarter.

Other BBNBA notes

  • Brandon Boston Jr. continues to impress on the injured New Orleans Pelicans. He started his sixth straight game last night, going for 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists in nearly 38 minutes. His efforts were rewarded with a 101-94 win against Jamal Murray and the Denver Nuggets. Murray finished with 16 points, eight assists, and six rebounds in the loss. Since being moved into the starting lineup, Boston has averaged 15.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, five assists, and 1.7 steals in 36.3 minutes per game. The 6-foot-7 guard is shooting 45.6 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from deep, and a perfect 100 percent from the line.
  • Reed Sheppard missed all five of his shot attempts (four coming from deep) in the Houston Rockets 125-104 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. Sheppard still managed two rebounds and one steal in his 11 minutes but did not score a single point.
  • Karl-Anthony Towns did not play in the New York Knicks’ 124-122 win over the Brooklyn Nets due to a knee injury. This was the first game he’s missed all season. The belief is that the injury is not significant.
