It was a back-and-forth kind of night for Miami on Monday.

The Heat took on the Brooklyn Nets in New York on Monday night. It was a low-scoring first half for Miami as the team only had 31 points on the board heading into the locker room. Brooklyn on the other hand came away with 45 and only allowed Jimmy Butler to finish the half with 10 points as he was the only Heat player to be in the double digits.

Both Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo had eight points each as they headed into halftime. By the start of the third quarter, the Nets found their largest lead of the night just two minutes in as the score was 47-31. This lead did not last long though as Miami went on a 12-0 run and with a little over seven minutes left in the third it was a completely different ballgame as the Heat only trailed 47-43.

Bad first half, better second

Herro played a huge role in the scoring run after he hit two back-to-back threes to cut it to 47-37. A jumper allowed Herro to tally two more points as he got it down to a four-point deficit at 47-43. Although the Nets found some luck from the arc themselves to give them a seven-point lead at 50-43 once again, Herro stepped up and hit a mid-range jumper to offset that lead.

Herro and Butler’s crazy third-quarter performances cut Miami’s deficit down to 69-68 as they headed into the fourth quarter. Both players combined for 26 of the team’s total 37 points scored in the third quarter alone.

Adebayo came out strong in the fourth and scored four points in under three minutes which gave the Heat their first lead of the half at 75-72 with a little over nine minutes remaining. Both teams went back and forth within the last eight minutes of the game and with 1:13 remaining, Brooklyn found themselves back in the lead with a score of 84-83. Herro stepped up again and another jumper put Miami ahead at 85-84 with under a minute left.

It’s a barn-burner, folks

Some Brooklyn free throws set the score at 86-85 to place the Nets ahead, but with 24 seconds left here came Herro with a swish to put the Heat back up by one. Adebayo was fouled with five seconds left and made one of his two shots to make it a two-point game as Miami now led 88-86. A shooting foul committed by Herro allowed the Nets to head to the stripe and make two buckets to tie it up at 88-88. With four seconds remaining, Butler drove down and attempted a jump shot that came up short and sent the game to overtime.

Right off the bat in OT Brooklyn took a fast 93-88 lead. After a two-minute scoring drought, Herro hit a deep three to cut the deficit down to 93-91 as 1:30 remained on the clock. The Nets were able to make it a 95-91 game before Herro found another three to make it 95-94 with under a minute left. With 11 seconds left, Butler was fouled in the act of shooting and hit both free throws to give Miami their first lead in overtime. A last-second game-winning attempt by Brooklyn did not fall and the Heat squeaked away with the 96-95 victory.

Although Adebayo was quiet on the offensive end as far as scoring, he pulled down 20 rebounds by the end of the game and led in playing time with 44 minutes total. Herro finished with 29 points and 11 rebounds and went 4-11 from behind the arc. Behind Butler, Herro was the team’s second-highest scorer for the night.

Davis leads Lakers over OKC

The Lakers faced off against Oklahoma City on Monday night in L.A. and came away with the dub. Both teams are competing in the Western Conference and the Thunder are currently No. 2 in the standings behind the Timberwolves while the Lakers are No. 10.

Former Kentucky star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been leading OKC to victory in their last matchups, but another former ‘Cat in Anthony Davis, who’s on the Lakers, was the dominant former UK star on Monday night.

Davis finished the night with a double-double performance as he had 27 points and 15 rebounds in his team’s win. The matchup started even on both sides as the score at the half was 50-50. Davis came away with 12 in the first quarter but laid an egg in the second and headed into the half with those 12 points. On the other side of the court, SGA had 14 points going into the locker room.

Another barn-burner

Following halftime, the score remained even until there was a little over three minutes left and the Lakers went up 79-74. Davis scored five of those big points in the little time that was left in the third quarter and increased L.A.’s lead to eight points by the end of the third as the score was then 84-76.

The Thunder came out hot in the fourth and cut their deficit back down to six. Thanks to another fellow former Kentucky player in Jarred Vanderbilt, the Lakers were able to get back to a nine-point lead off of a free throw and two-pointer. SGA was able to get Oklahoma City’s deficit back down to six points with a jumper with 2:05 remaining, but two clutch free throws from Davis in the final seconds secured the 112-105 dub for L.A.

Although OKC fell on Monday night, Gilgeous-Alexander was the second-leading scorer for his team with 24 points and six assists in 34 minutes played. Vanderbilt contributed to the Lakers’ big-time win with five points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Cason Wallace also played some big minutes for OKC and had five points by the end of the night, with three of those five coming from behind the arc.

Other BBNBA Notes for 1/15/2024:

  • Tyrese Maxey and the Sixers got the 124-115 dub on Monday night over Houston. Maxey finished the game with 27 points and was 60% from the three-point line.
  • The Knicks fell 98-94 to the Magic at home. Julius Randle came away with 15 points and only six rebounds in the loss to Orlando as New York was outscored 25-16 in the fourth.
  • Oscar Tshiebwe saw some playing time in the Pacers’ 132-105 loss on Monday night to the Jazz. Tshiebwe, the rebound machine, only tallied four points in his 12 minutes played but pulled down six rebounds in that time. Fellow former UK paint player Isaiah Jackson saw a little less court time on Monday night and only finished with one point, but also pulled down four rebounds in his eight minutes played.
