BBNBA: Malik Monk's overtime heroics lead Kings past Lakers
De’Aaron Fox helped swipe a win away from the Lakers on Sunday night, propelling the Sacramento Kings back from a 4th quarter deficit and forcing overtime. Fox erupted for 37 points and tacked on eight assists in regulation, however, he tweaked in ankle on one of the final plays and was unable to take the court in extra time.
Thankfully for the Kings, Fox’s former Kentucky backcourt teammate, Malik Monk, was prepared for the moment. With Domantas Sabonis fouled out and Fox sidelined, Monk scored 11 of his 22 total points in overtime, including two clutch 3s and an and-one, enabling the folks in Sac Town to light the beam.
Monk also chipped in three assists, one of which came in the closing minutes as he served as the primary ball handler with Fox out. Oh, and he knocked down some clutch free throws as well just to put a nice little polish on his crunch-time masterpiece.
Monk became only the third Kings player since 2000 to score 11 points or more in overtime. The other two were Peja Stojakovic and yep…De’Aaron Fox.
On the other side of the court, former National Champion, Anthony Davis, did not have a bad game himself. He had a monster 30-point, 16-rebound double-double, but was quiet down the stretch as the Lakers dropped their second game of the early season.

Tyrese Maxey notches 26 points in another Sixers win
On Saturday, early Most Improved Player candidate, Tyrese Maxey, posted 34 points in the Philadelphia 76ers’ victory over the Raptors. He followed up that performance with another 26 points in a blowout victory over the Trail Blazers on Sunday. That means that Maxey has scored–checks math–60 points in less than 24 hours. That is pretty good.
James Harden is pulling an Office Space and not going to work. He’s not quitting, he’s just not going to work anymore. While he awaits his promotion from the Bobs, Maxey has stepped in and become Philadelphia’s score-first guard on a very talented team.
Maxey casually grabbed 10 rebounds on the day as well to secure his first double-double of the season. Until team executives figure out what to do with Harden (and probably after), expect these types of tremendous outings to continue for the former Wildcat.
Other BBNBA Notes:
- The good news is that Cason Wallace matched Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in total points on Sunday. The bad news is that it was only seven points. SGA had a rare off-shooting night, going 2-16 from the field. Wallace, on the other hand, did not miss any of his three shot attempts including one from behind the arc in the Thunder’s blowout loss to the defending champion Denver Nuggets.
- The NBA is going to have a catch-22 on its hands when it comes to showcasing generational rookie Victor Wembanyama. On the one hand, everyone wants to see him play, but on the other, the Spurs are horrible. They lost by 40 on Sunday to the Clippers in a game where Keldon Johnson was off, shooting just 1-9 from the floor for a mere five points.
- Shaedon Sharpe scored a team-high 20 points for the Blazers in their loss. Two of those points came by way of an incredible reverse layup in traffic. “The Blazers lost but Shaedon Sharpe had an incredible highlight” is going to be a standard templated line all season long. Prepare accordingly.
