Tied at 107, the ball was in his hands. He dribbled to his left, pulled up at the 3-point line, pump-faked and “ONIONS!” as Bill Raftery would say.

Tyler Herro has hit some big shots in his career. The one Kentucky fans will remember the most was his dagger against Houston in the 2019 Sweet 16. However, more and more Herro heroics are going to be remembered, now in The Association, like the one below.

Although Herro’s trey with 1.8 seconds to beat the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night will get all the love, that was only three of 26 points that he posted. The “Bucket” led all scorers shooting 12-21 from the field and 2-6 from beyond the arc. Herro stepped up in place of the injured Jimmy Butler, who sat with a hip injury. The fourth-year shooting guard is averaging 18.6 PPG so far this season.

Herro wasn’t the only NBA ‘Cat who stepped up in South Beach, though.

HIs teammate, Bam Adebayo, recorded a cool double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. That wasn’t all from the ’16-17 Kentucky basketball class, with Malik Monk posting a season-high for the Kings. Monk had 19 points in a tremendous effort off the bench. The only thing that could’ve made this night better? If the complete holy trinity of that Elite Eight team would have all been in action last night. Unfortunately, De’Aaron Fox was sidelined with a knee injury.

It was Herro’s night ultimately, which will continue to bring up the question. Will the money he got this offseason prove to be worth it? Even though we’re only nine games in, he’s answered some of the doubts.

Mad (Max)ey

Another day, another beauty of a performance from the 2019 Mr. Basketball of Texas. Tyrese Maxey went off for the Philadelphia 76ers, something that seems to be a consistent trend this season. In a 121-111 loss at home against the Wizards, Maxey led all scorers with 32 points, shooting 11-20 from the field.

Maxey is averaging 24.2 PPG this season and continues to be a stellar force for the 4-5 76ers. There are no signs of cooling off for the young star just days after he dropped a career-high 44 points against the Toronto Raptors.

It may be wise to consult a Philly die-hard first, but I believe it’s safe to say that Maxey has implemented himself into the Big Three of the 76ers. This is of course way more impressive than it sounds, considering the other members of this “Big Three” are Joel Embiid and James Harden. That duo has a measly 15 NBA All-Star shouts between the two of them. Keep doing you, Tyrese Maxey.

Anthony Davis on a roll

That’s back-to-back 20+ point performances from Anthony Davis, this time coming against his former team, the New Orleans Pelicans. The Chicago-born big had a 20-point, 16-rebound double-double in a much-needed win for the struggling Los Angeles Lakers. Well… are they struggling? The Purple and Gold from the City of Angels have now won back-to-back games to go from 0-5 to 2-5. So yeah, struggling might still be an appropriate word.

The 2012 National Champ is averaging 23.2 PPG and has only missed one game so far this season. With Davis scoring and rebounding efficiently for this impossible-to-predict Lakers squad, he could add some more stability and consistency. Two things you knew he was always going to give pre-injuries.

The Western Conference waits for nobody and the Lakers will need Davis if they hope to be a postseason presence.

Other BBNBA notes

  • Jarred Vanderbilt tied his season-high with 15 points for the Utah Jazz in a 103-100 loss to Dallas Mavericks.
  • Julius Randle posted 14 points for New York the Knicks in a 112-99 loss against the Atlanta Hawks.
  • Four seemed to be the magic number in Milwaukee last night. Nerlens Noel, Hamidou Diallo, and Kevin Knox all posted four-point performances for the Detroit Pistons in a loss against the Bucks.
