The 2022 NBA Summer League season is coming to a close, with the last games taking place in Las Vegas this Sunday afternoon. The “Championship Game,” determined via miscellaneous records and tie-breakers, features the Knicks and Trail Blazers at three o’clock today. But before you tune in for that scintillating matchup, go ahead and catch up on what you missed on Saturday — the final day of competition for several BBN representatives.

TyTy shines in final game vs. Kings

After putting up just eight points on Thursday, Rockets rookie TyTy Washington Jr. closed out the Summer League season with a bang on Saturday. He came out of the gate hot with eight points in the first quarter, highlighted by this steal and breakaway slam:

The rookie finished on a high note with 15 points, three rebounds and four assists, his best line of the summer. He looked to have settled in with his new Rockets teammates in their fifth game together, scoring and dishing the rock with the same measured confidence we saw in Lexington last year. This dime to a cutting Trhae Mitchell was particularly smooth:

On the other side, Nate Sestina scored four points on 2-6 shooting in his last look for Sacramento. But the big story was Washington, who closed out the Vegas circuit averaging a solid 9.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists to 1.4 turnovers while shooting 37.5% from the floor. He deferred at times but showed flashes of the potential that many thought could make him a lottery pick before his injury. And most importantly, he showed Jai Lucas and Sahvir Wheeler that he’s still got the hops:

Looking forward, he figures to be solidly in the mix for backcourt minutes in Houston this season, potentially battling G-League product Daishen Nix for a backup point guard role.

Boston, Hagans go cold in final summer showings

Topping Friday’s 22-point performance was a tall task, so we’ll cut Brandon Boston Jr. some slack here. The second-year Clippers forward scored just seven points in his last Summer League outing, shooting a rough 2-11 from the field and coming up empty (0-5) from downtown. He still finished the week averaging 13.4 points and 5.6 rebounds, both highs among UK products with at least four games played in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, Ashton Hagans ran into similar shooting struggles in his final game with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ summer squad. Hagans shot just 1-7 from the field, missing his only three-pointer en route to four points. Hagans was not in his best form this week, scoring 2.5 points on an abysmal 13% clip from the field — albeit with a solid two steals per contest on defense.

Finally, three other former ‘Cats watched their final Summer League game pass by from the bench on Saturday: Kahlil Whitney, Nick Richards and Sacha Killeya-Jones. Of the three, Richards had the most memorable week, averaging 14.5 points and eight rebounds in the two games he did play; having already earned his contract, it would seem the Hornets had seen enough.
