Betting Big on Devin Leary at Mississippi State

Expectations were high this offseason for quarterback Devin Leary. The NC State star was a prolific passer in 2021, but the ACC Preseason Player of the Year hype that followed was derailed by an injury. One of the top players in the transfer portal, the Big Blue Nation anticipated high-flying fireworks at Kroger Field. The fuse remained unlit, until the final week of October.
Leary was completing only about 50% of his passes in SEC play. Against Tennessee he connected to eight different receivers on 71% of his pass attempts. He finished the day with 372 yards, more than his total output in the previous three games combined.
Devin Leary appeared to hit his stride against Tennessee. Now he has another big opportunity in a familiar setting.
Back in 2021, his best season under center, Leary and NC State traveled to Starkville. They did not leave with a win, but he threw the ball about 50 times for more than 300 passing yards. This Mississippi State defense is much more vulnerable to the pass attack.
The Bulldogs’ pass defense ranks 120th nationally in success rate. Opposing quarterbacks complete 72.9% of their passes. They rank 11th or worse in the SEC in every statistical category against the pass.
