Wednesday night was a homecoming for Otega Oweh at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Kentucky wing returned to Oklahoma where he spent his first two seasons in college basketball playing for head coach Porter Moser.

The game turned into a showdown. Oweh carried Kentucky to the finish line.

The wing’s lay-up with six seconds left gave Kentucky a close 83-82 win. Oweh finished the game with 28 points on 21 field goal attempts with six rebounds in 32 minutes. The junior scored 23 of Kentucky’s 40 points in the second half. The former Sooner carried Kentucky to a win after Lamont Butler (+10 in 20 minutes) fouled out with 4:16 left in the second half.

Kentucky scored 83 points in 72 possessions (1.15 points per possession) on 22-of-35 (62.9%) shooting from two, 7-of-23 (30.4%) shooting from three, and 18-of-24 (75%) shooting from the free throw line. Turnovers (18.1% turnover rate) were an issue again, but Oweh’s spectacular night was enough for Mark Pope‘s team to find a way. No other starter reached double-digits. Brandon Garrison chipped in 12 points and four rebounds with two three-point field goals in 27 minutes off the bench.

Oklahoma scored 82 points in 70 possessions (1.17 points per possession) on 20-of-32 (62.5%) shooting from two, 10-of-25 (40%) shooting from three, and 12-of-17 (70.6%) shooting from the free throw line. Ball security (21.4% turnover rate) was a massive issue for the Sooners, but the home team did get 38 total points on 30 field goal attempts from stars Jeremiah Fears and Jalon Moore. That was nearly enough to win. Oklahoma was plus-15 from three in the second and won the game’s rebounding battle (34-31), but that still wasn’t enough to get the win. Kentucky finishing plus-six from the free throw line made an impact in the game.

Clemson, Vanderbilt, and Texas were all road games where Kentucky failed to win the game in the final segment. After Butler fouled out, it felt like Kentucky was going to lose another one of those 50-50 road games. Otega Oweh put the team on his back like Greg Jennings.

Kentucky made just enough plays to win a close one on the road in the SEC.
